February 6-10, 2023

This is the most difficult weekly blog post I have ever had to write. Saying goodbye is never easy. It has been my absolute privilege to work with your child. Some I only met this year and some I have been with for almost 4 years. We have been through a lot together and each child has taught me as much as I hope that I have taught them. I will forever be thankful to have had the opportunity to teach, learn and grow at Ethel M Johnson.

This week we had the opportunity to slowly transition between teachers. I know that Mrs. Desiree will make a wonderful addition to the EMJ team.  The students will benefit from her experience and enthusiasm.

This week the students secretly created a very special gift for me. With Mrs. K's help from room 2, the students created a beautiful thumb print heart painting that I will forever cherish. After the students had their weekly Friday dance party with their room 2 friends I was asked to come to the room. When I walked in the students counted down from 3 and then all wished me goodbye. Two students presented me with the gift they had all created together. There were lots of hugs, and a few tears! Great job room 2 and 3 for the lovely surprise!

I am excited for my new journey with the CBE to begin on Monday morning, but know I will miss my EMJ friends. I can't wait to hear all about the fun and learning that will continue in room 3! Mrs. Desiree will be creating her own classroom blog and the link on our schools homepage will be updated as soon as her blog has been created.

January 30 - February 3, 2023

This week, due to the weather, we had to postpone our Winter Walk. We will participate in the walk next week. Students did spend some time earlier in the week outside before the temperature dropped. As a part of our daily morning shared learning we learn about the temperature. Students are learning that a minus (-) sign in front of the temperature means the temperature is below 👎 0 and when there is no minus sign the temperature is above 👍 0. We check each day using the Weather Report for kids, https://kidsweatherreport.com/report/Calgary/c, and then draw in the temperature on our thermometer and determine what that means for our recess.  Here is an example of the interactive SmartBoard page about our temperature.

We finished our research on the sun through songs, movement and informational text.  Students got to compare the relative sizes of the Sun and Earth using a basketball and a pebble. Students also used movement to learn that the sun is in the center of our solar system and that the planets revolve or move around the sun.

We completed our Sun inquiry with a writing activity where students created their own sentences with words we generated together.

We also started taking a closer look at the planets, starting with Mercury the closest planet to the sun, and will continue learning more about the 8 planets and practicing our informational reading and writing.

Have a wonderful Weekend!
